Five bookkeeping habits that save you money at tax time
Bowker Accountants Team
Small, regular habits that keep your books tidy year-round and make Self Assessment far less stressful.
Good bookkeeping isn’t about spending more time on it — it’s about spending a little time, often. Here are five habits worth building.
1. Reconcile weekly, not annually
Waiting until year-end to reconcile transactions turns a five-minute task into a multi-day one, and mistakes get harder to trace the older they are.
2. Separate business and personal spending
A dedicated business account (even for sole traders) makes every other habit on this list easier.
3. Photograph receipts immediately
Capture receipts the moment you get them rather than stockpiling paper — most bookkeeping software will happily read them straight from a photo.
4. Track mileage as you go
A running log beats reconstructing a year of journeys from memory in January.
5. Review your numbers monthly
A short monthly check-in catches issues — and opportunities — long before your accountant sees the year-end figures.
