How easy is it to change accountants?
Bowker Accountants Team
Changing accountants is usually straightforward — professional clearance, HMRC authorisation and a clean handover of records.
Switching accountants feels more daunting than it usually is. Most moves are a short administrative process, not a confrontation.
The normal handover
- You appoint the new firm — once you are happy with scope and fees.
- Professional clearance — your new accountant writes to the old one asking whether there is any reason they should not act (unpaid fees, ethical issues, incomplete work). Replies are usually routine.
- HMRC authorisation — Agent services accounts are updated so the new firm can see your tax position and file on your behalf.
- Records transfer — prior year accounts, tax returns, payroll schemes, VAT records and software access move across.
You stay in control of your own books and filings throughout. You are not “locked in” to a firm because they once filed a return.
Timing
You can change mid-year. Many clients switch after a poor filing experience or when they outgrow a generalist. The cleanest moment is often just after a year-end has been filed, so the new firm starts a fresh period with complete prior-year papers — but waiting is not required if you need support now.
Watch deadlines: Self Assessment, Corporation Tax and Companies House dates do not pause while agents change hands. Flag imminent filings early so nothing falls between firms.
What to prepare
Have your latest accounts, tax computations, login details for bookkeeping software, and a list of open queries. The better the pack, the faster the new accountant can take over without rework.
If you are considering a move to a firm that already works with landlords and healthcare professionals, contact us — we handle professional clearance regularly and will be clear about whether we are the right fit before anything starts.
